Scrap Metal Trading
Through our trading company subsidiary, Schnitzer Global Exchange, we purchase processed ferrous metal from metal processors in Russia and the rest of the Baltic region and then sell it to steel mills around the world. In fiscal 2007, we traded 1.2 million tons of processed ferrous metal. Our trading business complements our processing business by further meeting the needs of our foreign customers and expands Schnitzer Steel’s share of the global market for recycled ferrous metal.
We have found Russia and the Baltic region to be attractive markets because our metal processing suppliers have an ample supply of unprocessed metal from obsolete/closed Cold War era infrastructure to take advantage of. Our expertise in managing the sometimes challenging transportation infrastructures in this region helps ensure availability and timely shipments.
Customers can rely on Global Exchange as part of a solid, Fortune 1000 company that has been in business for over a century. Our stable, reliable service is run by a highly capable staff of experts in the global metals recycling industry who have a reputation for providing good quality scrap metal. Unlike brokers, we can handle your transaction from end to end including providing transportation and other logistical support. Our flexibility allows us to supply scrap cargoes of various types and sizes wherever it is needed around the globe.
